We have a balanced literacy program, which includes teacher read alouds, guided reading groups, partner reading, and independent reading. By the end of kindergarten, your child is expected to be reading at a level 4 or higher and be able to read specific sight words (also called “Snap Words”). We will also learn the Phonics Dance. It’s a fun program that helps with letter/sound recognition. We will be utilizing a literacy structure called “The Daily 5”. The Daily 5 teaches independence and gives children the skills needed to create a lifetime love of reading and writing. It consists of five tasks that include: read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, work on writing, and word work.
*Your child should be read to, or he/she should read to you at least 15 minutes each night. Information should be recorded on the reading log stapled behind the behavior chart in your child’s Take Home Folder. Students that read 200 minutes each month will be rewarded!*
